Manchester United went into Thursday's final Europa
League group stage game against Zorya Luhansk hoping to get out of the Ukraine
without losing any extremities to frostbite or picking up any injuries on the
rock-solid pitch.
A draw would have been enough to see them through ahead of
kickoff, but given Fenerbahce's victory over Feyenoord on Thursday, United
could have lost and still advanced.
As
it was, United beat Zorya 2-0, playing totally within themselves against a
clearly inferior side. United totally dominated possession and chances even if
the home side arguably had the best opportunity of the first half, which keeper
Sergio Romero managed to save. Henrikh Mkhitaryan put United ahead minutes into
the second half before Zlatan Ibrahimovic secured the victory minutes before
the end.
Still,
they are left unseeded in the draw after finishing second in the group. What is
viewed as a fairly meaningless competition among United fans may become
increasingly important, though, if they continue to drop points so easily in
the Premier League. Winning this could be their best chance of Champions League
football next season.
