A
negotiation over a sell-on clause is delaying Victor Lindelof 's protracted
move to Manchester United.
Despite
suggestions otherwise it is understood United's move for £38million-rated
Lindelof is still on.
But
a dispute over an outstanding payment to the Swede's former club Vasteras is
holding matters up.
Should
Benfica fail to get the 20 per cent fee reduced (around €250,000), they have
informed United they will have to make up the difference as part of Lindelof's
transfer package, report the Manchester Evening News.
Vasteras,
whose last home match was attended by 385 spectators, could pocket £7.6million
if Lindelof leaves for £38m and Benfica have omitted the Sweden international
from their matchday squads in their last two games.
Vasteras
were entitled to an additional payment after Lindelof made 10 senior starts in
the Primeira Liga and Champions League and the Swedish side has submitted a
formal complaint to Fifa’s players’ status committee over Benfica's conduct.
It
emerged last week United had cooled their interest in Lindelof, citing the
impressive form of central defensive pairing Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, who
have started nine of the last 10 unbeaten Premier League matches.
United
scouted Lindelof three weeks before the transfer window opened and Benfica
coach Rui Vitoria admitted last month the club was prepared for Lindelof's
possible departure in the new year.
"Sometimes
players have to leave because their careers, their age, the way they are playing
and developing means there will be clubs interested who can give them a
different life and take them on a different path," he said.
"If
this happens, we have solutions. We have a B team packed with great players and
in the short term some of them will be playing for Benfica's first-team."
Over
the last six years, Benfica have sold 13 of their most sought-after players for
a total of £270m and last year United missed out on signing Renato Sanches
because of their failure to appoint Jose Mourinho sooner.
Lindelof
has already played 22 times for club and country this season and is just the
latest Benfica talent to interest United.
The
club monitored Javi Garcia, Ezequiel Garay, Nico Gaitan and, most recently,
Sanches. Sanches' agent Jorge Mendes convinced United executive vice-chairman
Ed Woodward to scout the teenager in January last year and he was then
regularly watched by United but joined Bayern in May.
United
have never signed a player from Benfica.
