A
MAN who killed is wife after driving into a canal as the couple had sex while
he was high on drugs and drunk has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Matthew
Notebeart wept as the judge blasted the dad-of-two for “failing his wife” and
“failing his kids”.
The
33-year-old was arrested in March 2014 after he drove off a dirt road in Palm
Beach, Florida, and into a canal bank causing his wife Amanda to fatally strike
her head on the windshield.
It
later emerged that neither Matthew or his wife were wearing seat belts because
Amanda was sat on his lap and they were having sex.
Matthew
told how it was Amanda’s first night out since the birth of their second child
and he had bought her tickets to a concert for Valentine’s Day.
On
the way home they began drinking some alcohol from a flask and decided to pull
over to have sex, which is when the crash occurred.
A
toxicology report showed that his blood alcohol content was twice the level
that drivers are impaired and he also had marijuana in his system.
Matthew
pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide as part of a plea deal where prosecutors
dropped the DUI manslaughter charge against him.
He
told the court how he missed his wife “more than words can express”, the Palm
Beach Post reported.
His
lawyers were hoping he might receive no jail time so that he could raise his
two kids Gage, 12, and Stacey, three.
But
Amanda’s dad Mike Stacey asked for the maximum sentence to be imposed saying
Matthew “had a responsibility to get his wife home safely”.
Sentencing
him, Judge Laura Johnson called it “the most senseless, tragic acts” she’d ever
come across.
She
said: “This isn’t your first chance. You’ve been to jail before, you’ve been on
probation.
“You
failed your wife, you failed your children and you failed all your family that
is here today.
